Use a connected app in an automation or with an AI agent
Once an app is connected, your automations can run actions in it and your AI agents can use it as a tool. You do not configure the action by hand. You describe what you want and the AI builder picks the action.
In an automation
Describe the automation and name the app. For example:
- "When a new job is created, post the customer name and address in our #jobs Slack channel."
- "Every morning, add yesterday's completed jobs to our Google Sheet."
The assistant builds the automation with an App action step. The step's card shows the app's logo and the action it runs. If the app is not connected yet, the assistant shows a connect button first.
Test it with a dry run before turning it on. In a dry run, actions in connected apps are simulated, so nothing is posted or changed in the other app. See Test an automation with a dry run.
Team connections and personal connections
When you connect an app you choose Connect for team or Connect for me.
- A team connection suits shared tools: the company Slack, the accounting system, a shared spreadsheet.
- A personal connection suits something that belongs to one person, such as their own mailbox.
An automation can also be built to run once for each person who has connected the app, for example to check each team member's inbox. Say that in your description if it is what you want.
With an AI agent
- Open the agent and go to its Sources section. This is where you choose the tools, connected apps and documents the agent can use.
- Turn on the connected apps this agent should be allowed to use.
- To connect another app from here, click Add and choose Connect an app.
The agent can then use that app's actions while it works, for example looking up a customer in your accounting system before replying.
Give an agent only the apps it needs. An agent with access to your mailbox can send email from it.
Add a custom MCP server to an agent
If a service offers its own MCP server, an agent can use it directly.
- In the agent's Sources section, click Add and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name and the server's URL.
- The server is checked as you type. If it reports tools, click Add Server. If it says the server signs you in, click Connect and sign in.
Servers that take a token instead of a sign-in have an Auth header field under Advanced.
See what depends on a connection
Open Tools, choose Integrations and click a connection. The detail view lists the automations using that app. Check it before you disconnect anything.
Limits
Integrations need the Business plan or above. Each action in a connected app uses one run credit from your workspace's monthly pool. See Run credits and AI credits for automations.
