Connect Claude or another AI tool to your app (MCP)
Your app has an MCP server, which lets AI tools such as Claude, Cursor or Windsurf work with it directly. Once connected, the AI tool can look at your tables, read and change records, and build in your app using the same tools as the in-app assistant. MCP needs the Business plan or above.
The connector URL
```
https://unstack.us/mcp
```
Connect Claude
- In your app, open Tools in the sidebar and choose Data & API.
- Open the AI & MCP tab.
- Open Connect a new client and copy the Connector URL.
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Paste the connector URL and click Add.
- Click Connect and sign in with your Unstack account to approve access.
No API key, client ID or secret is needed. The connection runs over a signed-in session that carries your own permissions, so the AI tool can do what you can do and no more.
Connect Cursor, Windsurf or another client
Open Custom MCP on the same tab. It shows the endpoint, the transport (JSON-RPC 2.0 over Streamable HTTP) and ready-to-copy configuration.
A client that supports sign-in can use the connector URL as it is. For a client that does not, use an API key in the x-api-key header:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"unstack": {
"url": "https://unstack.us/mcp",
"transport": "streamable-http",
"headers": { "x-api-key": "YOUR_API_KEY_HERE" }
}
}
}
```
Create the key on the API Keys tab. The key's scopes decide which tools the client can use. A tool that needs a scope the key lacks is refused. See Create an API key.
See and remove connections
The Connected Clients list on the AI & MCP tab shows each connected client and the team members who connected it. Click Disconnect next to a member to revoke that connection. It stops working immediately.
What to know before you build this way
- Changes are live straight away. When an AI tool creates or changes a table through MCP, the change is applied to your live app immediately. There is no draft and no separate publish step over MCP, so ask for exactly what you want.
- The AI runs on your own AI subscription. Your Claude or Cursor plan pays for the thinking. A few tools that run AI inside Unstack still use your workspace's AI credits.
- There is a rate limit. MCP allows 300 requests per hour for each app. It is separate from the REST API's limit.
- Every call is authenticated. Listing tools needs a valid connection too.
Good first requests
Once connected, try asking the AI tool:
- "Show me the tables in my Unstack app and what fields they have."
- "How many jobs were completed last week?"
- "Add a table for equipment with a name, serial number and last service date."
Troubleshooting
The client says access was denied or the plan does not include it. MCP is part of the Business plan and above.
The connection stopped working. Check Connected Clients. If the client is no longer listed, connect it again.
A tool call is refused when using an API key. The key lacks the scope that tool needs. Create a key with the right scopes.
